It’s that time of year when we start looking back over the “bests” we’ve encountered in the past 12 months, the moments – or in my case – the places that stood out in the crowd.
Here are some of mine: Kruse & Muer on Woodward, Bella Piatti, Common Pub, Ristorante Bucci, M Cantina, La Lanterna, Apparatus Room, Gaudino’s, Grey Ghost, and Prime + Proper.
They range all over the map, not just geographically, but also in terms of atmosphere, style of food, cost and that X factor that pulls it all together. What they have in common is a dedicated proprietor and a team of people determined to make it work.
Six are in the Detroit, one in Grosse Pointe Woods and others in Royal Oak, Dearborn, Birmingham, and St. Clair Shores. The predominance of the city certainly shows how the dining scene has expanded over the past year. And all provided a memorable experience, from the over-the-top glamour of the Apparatus Room and Prime + Proper to the Italian market theme of Gaudino’s and the spicy Mexican street fare of M Cantina.
