PAINTING WITH A TWIST

It has been thrilling living downtown because I swear every single time I go walking (yes even aimlessly) the blocks of Woodward and crossing intersections, I see a new sign. Detroit has been welcoming numerous restaurants and stores, but people are beginning to ask, “What’s there TO DO in Detroit?” Yeah we can go out to eat or go shop, or go get drinks… But what are some other attractions? Well the Lewis sisters, Donna and Michelle, accomplished their dream and answer our question by opening Painting With a Twist (PWAT) just this week on Washington Boulevard.

I have always heard about Painting With a Twist too, seeing my social media connections post their experiences at Michelle’s other locations in Ferndale or Farmington with their painting and personal wine selection. So I was elated to be invited to a class the very same day I inquired about its grand opening.

Not only is the establishment in the historic Julian C. Madison building, decorated with some of the 2,000 canvas choices for class, giving a pleasurable ambience, the friendly interactions between the personnel and us attendants made the experience even more convivial.

The artist of our session, Jermaine Rivers, was very enthusiastic as he instructed us along every layer among the 16 x20 inch canvas. It was very enjoyable! We went from brush stroke to brush stroke, color to color and during our wet paint drying breaks for creating the next layer we even played Telephone, which definitely added some great laughs. Lol you had to be there to hear our final sentences.

To move along, I really have to say franchise owners, Donna and Michelle changed the game with bringing Painting With a Twist to Downtown Detroit. As native Detroiters, this was their dream to do something for their hometown and they are excited to be a part of the resurgence of Detroit in a new and creative way.

What is most enjoyable for them is to see what painting does for people. It is relaxing, and a true therapeutic activity for some. While talking with Michelle she described how she has gotten to know recurring attendants over the years since her first opening of the Ferndale location in 2010. So, that night she introduced me to a woman Kimberly Johnson, and her mother Josephine Jordan Holmes. Kimberly shared how going to PWAT has changed her life since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Kimberly and Josephine have bonded every week over this activity and have even held (3) fundraisers at PWAT to donate $1500+ to, cancer support center, Gilda’s Club in Rochester, MI.

Great story on how PWAT and Lewis sisters are truly making positive impacts with their franchise. Congratulations to Donna and Michelle Lewis for attaining their dreams and opening PWAT in downtown Detroit, and providing a new activity that people can engage in for fun, bonding, relaxation and laughs.
