Ken & Ken

There is something to be said for getting older! I’ve been in the fashion biz for quite some time now which has provided me with the opportunities to “check off” many wishes on my “Fashion Bucket List.” At this point in my career, it’s actually become a “Fashion Thimble List.” One of the last wishes on there was to share a stage with Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus Senior Vice President & Fashion Director.

Ha! Like that’s ever going to happen…Guess what? “CHECK MARK!” It was recently my great pleasure and distinct honor to introduce an icon in the fashion industry, a man who Anna Wintour has on speed dial…and FaceTime! The one and the only:Ken Downing.

Ken and I cohosted an evening event of Trend highlights for Women for Fall 2014 in a show starring top Detroit models on a zebra print runway. While Neiman Marcus clients, guests, and friends sipped and nibbled couture cocktails and canapés, Ken spoke to the many key trends he had edited, styled, and accessorized featuring designers including Celine, Etro, Alexander McQueen, Donna Karan, Gucci, and Stella McCartney as well as Neiman Marcus exclusives Jil Sander, Givenchy and The Row.

The quotable Ken elaborated on Global Chic,Outgoing Outerwear, Knit Dressing, and major color story – Gray Matter. In addition, he zeroed in on super accessory tips asStatement Necklaces in turquoise, “Turquoise is the leopard print of the jewelry world – always there and always right”,Trousers, “literally the chicest thing on two legs”,andFringe, “these handbags truly have fringe benefits.”

When queried at the end of the show about Detroit Women’s style, not pausing for a moment and wearing an “I HEART DETROIT” wristband, Ken responded, “I don’t know how you look when I’m not here, but whenever I come you bring it full force!”

Are you ready for the Fall 2014 Women’s Trends? At Neiman Marcus, the Trends are ready for you!

Gray Matter: 50 shades and then some.
From pearl to dove to pewter to charcoal.

Global Chic: A multi-cultural melding of texture, print and color. Asia, Africa, Latin America and the American Southwest all offer fertile ground for fashion inspiration.

Greens: Loden to lime, emerald to olive.
Greens adore greens and pair great with gray.

Outgoing Outerwear: Statement coats to stand out in a crowd. Supersized shapes lead the pack.

Knit Dressing: Volume play is the news of the
day.  Knits love knits and are happy BFF’s.

Trousers: Trousers top the trend in bottoms. Pleated or plain front – lean or cut wide for the perfect runway stride.

The Clutch: The season’s grab & go is a must for daytime. No longer an evening only accessory.

The Year-Round Bootie: Footwear for all seasons. The perfect play to fuller skirts, wider trousers, and all-shape dresses.

Statement Necklaces: The bolder the better. Fall’s jewelry focus is on the neck.

Shimmer Time: Glowing skin, iridescent cheeks, shimmering eyes, and a subtle sheen on the lips.
